ABOUT ME

 

 

I am a licensed architect (CA #23856) since 1992. I was raised in Marin County and have lived in Healdsburg since 1993. I am a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management.

 

I spent my fourth year studying overseas in Denmark, where I gained an appreciation for simple, comfortable, and people-oriented design. I’ve carried these values with me throughout my career.

 

As an architect, I have the opportunity to affect people’s lives whether they realize it or not. I’ve always endeavored to give back to my community whenever the opportunity arises. I have served on the Healdsburg Planning Commission and Healdsburg Airport Commission. I have also been involved with the Rotary Clubs of Healdsburg, and have served as a Volunteer Firefighter.

PROCESS

I believe in a collaborative process in which the client is central. Rather than promoting a prescribed or signature style, I allow the particulars of the property, as well as user needs and desires, to emerge as the guideposts of the design process. This can be an enjoyable experience that is engaging to all involved.

 

While the design process of each project is unique, each follows similar steps. After defining a program (room sizes, relationships, views, light, etc.) and assessing the site conditions (topography, vegetation, climate, local context, traditions, and available resources), I generate appropriate response strategies and develop two or three schematic design options. We then evaluate each option to identify its advantages and disadvantages. From this exercise, a final schematic design emerges. I then begin work on developing the details of the design and producing and coordinating a set of construction documents suitable for submitting to the governing agency for a building permit. With the building permit in hand, we begin construction and the project ultimately comes to fruition.

 

I recommend and prefer to collaborate with builders relatively early in the design process, and remain in close communication with them throughout the construction process. Having a General Contractor on board early on helps to secure a place in their construction schedule, and they can assist with value engineering along the way and provide valuable input to ensure the budget is aligned with expectations.

 

By following this basic outline, I have successfully completed more than 100 custom residential, winery, and commercial projects.
